Know what time it is? It's hero of JUSTICE time!

[After getting a weapon from a certain Yurippe, Sayaka's been looking for a fight. The katana feels right in her hands. It's certainly not the sword she fought with in life but it's close enough that she can feel comfortable using it.

Her goals are simple. She's out to take down as many shadows as she can and to make sure that no one gets taken by them. Sayaka's always on the move. She does stop for a minute to send a simple message to Madoka, Mami, and Kyouko: If you need back up, just tell me where you are.

It's time for Magical Justice Girl Sayaka to get back to work.

[Sayaka slashes it once and then again. It's satisfying to fight again. Her grin isn't feral but very self-satisfied as the shadow fades away.]

[Kyouko sets the bat on her shoulder and stretches her off arm.]

That wasn't so bad.

[Her ferocity gives way to a more supportive smile.]

You probably oughta lead the way, and I can keep ya covered.

I could do this forever.

[She gives a reckless smile, more confident in her victory still. Even if she is breathing a little harder.]

Sounds good. I want to swing by the dorms on the way--to see if Mami-san and Madoka are there.

Fine with me. Just try not to get too cocky.

[Like she's one to talk. Oh well. After you, Feesh Girl.]

Speak for yourself.

[She'll be heading off. Keep up, Candlehead.]

[Kyouko has no problem keeping pace. In fact, if she knew the best way to the dorms, she'd totally be ahead.

But she doesn't, so she simply trails Sayaka, keeping an eye out for more shadows.]

[She keeps the pace brisk.]

Didn't think I'd be fighting here.

[Kyouko gives her a vaguely bored look, like this is all No Big Deal.]

Yeah? I was kinda hopin' for an excuse to get some exercise. Plus, your favorite transfer student told me something like this might happen.

[This does not, however, explain why she was still unprepared.]

[Sayaka glowers at the mention of That Person who Will Not be Named.]

That girl probably is using this an excuse to play hero for Madoka.

[Except the only one playing hero is Sayaka herself. Oops.]

[Jeez, Sayaka, don't make Kyouko be the logical one.]

That's OK as long as she's safe, right? At least Akemi isn't going to let her get hurt.

I still don't like her being near her. I mean, she might lock her in a basement or something.

[Kyouko isn't sure to what extent Sayaka is using hyperbole, so she makes an effort not to sound too accusatory.]

If you're that worried, why haven't you done anything about it?

[She turns around to give her a glare.]

I told Madoka to stay near Mami-san or me. [Beat] That was before you came here.

[Kyouko returns the look with steady eyes.]

That's a start.

But if it came down to it, do ya think you could stop Akemi if she really went off her rocker?

[In truth? No. Sayaka's brazen but she's not stupid. Homura's obviously far more experienced than she.

She puffs herself up a bit more.]

I'd fight her until I got Madoka back. That's all there is to it.

If she creamed you over and over, would you even ask for help?

[Not that Kyouko would actually wait for her permission, but hey.]

I can fight my own battles.

[She's that stubborn. Some things never change.]

[Yup. And it actually ticks Kyouko right off. She even forgets for a second that Sayaka doesn't share her more recent memories.]

That kinda shitty attitude is what got you here in the first place. You think it's heroic just to suffer and lose by yourself instead of gettin' help when you need it? It's pretty obvious Madoka wouldn't want to see you go through all of that again.

[That makes Sayaka even angrier. Why had Mami even wanted her to try make friends with such an unpleasant girl? She won't drive Kyouko away but it's obvious that she's growing very annoyed.]

I'm going to save Madoka! [She snaps. She stops in her tracks, katana clenched in her fists. Her knuckles were turning white with the force of the grip.] You think I'm just going to become a witch again, huh? Think that you have to make sure I don't turn into something worse than these shadows. Is that it? Have to save the common people from Sayaka, right? Can't leave her by herself. She'll just make a mess of everything.

[Kyouko halts abruptly, and most of the anger on her face shifts to surprise once Sayaka starts going off. Once or twice she's close to interrupting her, but instead Kyouko forces herself to take a breath.]

Stop it. That's not what I said at all!

If you don't have your Soul Gem, then you won't become a witch. Why can't you just get it through that thick skull that none of us wanna see you hurt yourself? All that other crap… you're just…

[And she bites back whatever she was going to say next.]

[She shouldn't have snapped. Sayaka knows that. She'd never say it but she knew. Ever since Mami had told Sayaka what happened to her and then Madoka confirmed it--a sick feeling was present in her mind. Like thorns that had grown out of nowhere. She managed to keep it down for the most part. Now...it feels like the thorns were biting deep.

Realizing she was dead hurt. Finding out the truth about the magical girls soon after made her head ache. Then hearing what happened to her? Maybe it was a miracle Sayaka hadn't broke down sooner.

Nobody told her about the relationship between Soul Gems and witches. She didn't have hers so there's no danger for the others. For now.]

But I already became one.

[She bites her tongue. She had meant to say that she could do by herself but that was the truth. Sayaka needed to do this alone. She had to. Maybe this was her punishment for being so weak.]

If I can stop the shadows and the transfer student then--[She could show everyone that she's not just a waste of time. She stops herself.] It hurts. I could have killed my best friend, someone who's never hurt anyone, and I'd never even know.

[Kyouko's heart had grown its own thorns the day her father discovered she was Magical Girl — the day he changed. And it had become encased in them the day she lost her sister and her mother. She'd blamed herself, too. For all of it. Her family… they'd never done anything wrong. Her parents had been perfectly loving, and her sister perfectly innocent.

It wasn't fair. But Kyouko also knows that it isn't fair for Sayaka to blame herself. She doesn't know how to help Sayaka, or even console her, but one thing she can do is tell her the truth.]

Maybe Madoka didn't tell you, but… it was just for a day. That's how long you were a witch.

I was there when your Soul Gem disappeared. I couldn't fight then because I had your body. I was carryin' it when I ran into Madoka. I followed her to school the next morning and got her to come with me. Our plan was to get your Soul Gem back.

[Kyouko exhales and looks away.]

'Course it didn't work. I told Madoka to try and talk to you, to see if… if any of the real you was left. The witch just kept on attacking, and I was gettin' pummeled. In the end, all I could do was use the last of my energy to beat it.

[When she looks back at Sayaka, her eyes are cold and hard.]

Now that you know, don't you dare blame yourself. It was my choice. I dunno how many people you could've hurt in a day, but I'm pretty damn sure that's a lower life expectancy than most witches have. And you didn't know what kind of shitty contract you were making in the first place. So I don't wanna hear any more! I'll plug my own ears if I have to!

[Just a day. Those words repeat in her head. If it had taken Kyouko all her strength to defeat the witch--what about the familiars? There's no way that all of them had been dealt with. That thought repeats itself and it makes her sick.

She doesn't look at Kyouko.]

Madoka said she had tried talking to me. [It wouldn't make sense if she had been by herself. Now that she had the remaining information.] I thought it was weird since she couldn't stand against a witch by herself.

[She killed Kyouko. That much was clear now. She killed this girl and she's trying to...what? Make her stop blaming herself? That didn't make any sense. Why?

Of course Sayaka blames herself. She was weak enough to succumb to it. She should have asked questions instead of blindly believing whatever Kyubey said. She should have known better. If not for her own sake then for Madoka's. If she hadn't made that stupid contract then Kyouko wouldn't have been killed. Madoka wouldn't have been so worried.]

Fine. [She speaks after a few moments.] We've got to keep moving before those stupid shadows show up again.

[She'll just keep her thoughts to herself, then.]

[Almost immediately, Kyouko regrets the last part of her little diatribe. If she was actually a friend, she'd be able to listen to Sayaka speak her mind without losing her temper.

But she's not a friend. It's like every other thing she says to Sayaka is wrong in some way. And worse, there's the ever-looming threat that Sayaka will get her memories back, and she'll remember the terrible things Kyouko did to her.

Kyouko doesn't have the stomach to reveal those truths. And since she doesn't, is it really OK for her to be tagging along with Sayaka like this? The answer, Kyouko thinks, is almost definitely no.]

You go on. I just… thought of something else I hafta do.

[Mami wanted her to make friends with Kyouko. So did Madoka, in her own way. Maybe it was their way of trying to mend the gap between them.

She should try to keep Kyouko from leaving. For Mami-san's sake but she can't think of anything. Besides, if Sayaka's honest maybe it's best for both of them to go separate ways for now. Instead the best she can come up with is,]

Suzumiya might have better weapons. Use the phone to contact her.

[It's the least she can do.] --and don't let those stupid things touch you. [That last bit is to make sure that she doesn't turn into a NPC. If that happened... Sayaka knew it wouldn't be good. Even if she didn't have much fondness for the girl.]
